Bühler Denmark A/S and Business Unit (BU) Biscuit are part of the Grains & Food Division of the Bühler Group. The BU has 191 employees, with HQ in Skovlunde/Copenhagen and a Manufacturing Site in Rødkærsbro (63 employees). The BU acts as an independent manufacturer and distributor of baking machinery.
In Skovlunde HQ, Bühler has an Application & Training Center, serving its purpose as a collaborative platform to inspire and innovate.

The position

We are seeking a Project Engineer to lead R&D projects as part of the Bühler Group’s
future automation setup and digitalization journey and transformation of Biscuit manufacturing.

You will collaborate across engineering functions (mechanical, electrical, automation) and departments like Product Management and the Food Technologist/Application Center.

You will use your generalist knowledge of automation, such as PLC software, hardware, web-based HMI solutions, data analytics, and sensor technology, to guide the direction of current and future products and influence the product roadmap. As part of your projects, you will be supported by specialists in the global organization.

The position is based in Skovlunde, with some traveling approximately one week every quarter, with flexibility to fit your schedule. The travel is mainly to India, where our biscuit production is placed.

You will report to the Head of R&D BU Biscuit, based in Skovlunde.

The situation

Bühler Group is committed to having more sustainable solutions and fully automatic industrial production ready to roll out by 2025 and for launch in various business areas, including Business Unit Biscuit.

The ambition is to enhance user-friendliness, efficiency, and waste reduction through modern HMI designs, new sensors, data analytics, and AI. We are seeking to drive the digital transformation of the Biscuit manufacturing process to bring value to our customers

Bühlers is renowned for producing high-quality, precise equipment for industrial cookie, biscuit, and cracker production and for providing solutions for forming and baking these products.

You will be working on projects in the following areas:

Control Systems:

  • Conceptualize and coordinate the development of new control systems (PLC codes) for production processes.
  • Implement a new web-based control system accessible by cell phone, with visuals created by 2 FTEs in India and machine experience coded by 1 FTE in Prague.

HMI (Human-Machine Interface):

  • Lead the team to implement our new global HMI solution in existing products.
  • Roll out the HMI implementation in India. Coordinate with the HMI implementation team based in India, Prague, and Switzerland.

Digital Solutions:

  • Create new Digital Solutions to support and achieve our vision of a “lights out” production for our customers by developing smart solutions that improve process quality and enable an autonomous production facility, using “new” sensors, software, data analytics, and artificial intelligence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Product Management to define and refine requirements for innovative solutions.
  • Manage project budgets, resources, and other responsibilities.
  • Leverage digital technologies to explore possibilities and enhance customer support.
  • Contribute to defining the roadmap for future developments to achieve our strategic vision.
  • Lead the creation of new solutions in collaboration with domain experts.
  • Oversee the implementation of new solutions within our international network.
  • Define and document requirements, including functional descriptions, to guide implementation tasks.
  • Provide regular updates on project progress.
  • Work closely with our headquarters in Uzwil, Switzerland, responsible for many platform solutions.

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate has a background in mechanics and some general knowledge of automation.

To the extent that you can connect different engineering disciplines, combining mechanical insights with knowledge of automation technologies, software, programming languages, and best practices.

You have the experience to manage and coordinate the experts working on a project. You will link different technical specialists in the project group, leading and ensuring everything runs smoothly and cohesively.

We expect that you have completed or been a critical part of some projects involving the practical implementation of automation to some level.

Additionally, you can explain automation and digital concepts effectively to non-automation experts.

Candidate qualifications

  • Hold a relevant education within mechanical engineering, such as a Bachelor or Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with engineering project work either as a participant or lead.
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork and communication skills across national borders.
  • Bridge the gap between automation and digital worlds for non-experts, including engineers, management, and customers.
  • Be results-focused, motivating project members to deliver the best solutions.
  • Be familiar with software such as PLC (Siemens or Allen Bradley), HMI (Angular, TypeScript, CSS, HTML5, C#/.NET), and Dashboard (Kuros).
  • Use modern planning and work methodologies like sprints, scrums, and GitHub to a reasonale degree.
  • Have an affinity for automation and digital innovation.
  • Maintain a structured and well-documented approach.
  • Possess excellent English skills, both written and spoken.
  • Be proactive with attention to detail and quality.
  • Optional: Experience in multi-cultural teams and building good relationships worldwide.
