The Product Innovation department
Ferrosan Medical Devices is working on several innovation projects to address new surgical needs. These projects explore trends and new concepts in a growing market with a changing surgical setting toward robotics and minimally invasive surgery. In 2025, the Product Innovation department will focus on exploring and evaluating new ideas to be presented as part of our innovation strategy while screening these ideas through our pre-project model (FEI).
The Product Innovation department focuses primarily on the explorative and concept research phase leading up to the design lock. However, the department is also involved in various stages of the development process, from concept creation to production. Our work centers on discovering and developing new devices and formulations classified as Class II and III, designed for surgical applications in hemostasis and leak management, strongly emphasizing addressing end-user needs.
The department consists of a highly skilled team of 17 scientists, engineers, and technicians covering various scientific and technical disciplines, such as chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical science, process engineering, design research, and prototyping. The department houses three laboratories, a machine shop, and a pilot facility.
The Product Innovation department is placed under New Business Development, and you report to the Product Innovation Director.
We are looking for a Project Manager with experience leading a creative team, which is both stimulating and, at the same time, challenging to navigate and lead in a project.
Your role
As our new Project Manager, you will lead a highly specialized research team working on a breakthrough in advanced hemostat formulation, focusing on dry powder and granulate formulation processes. The team comprises 8 vibrant FTEs, including biochemists, pharmaceutical scientists, design researchers, and regulatory specialists. Many team members hold Ph.D. degrees, contributing deep expertise and diverse perspectives to drive innovation.
Your project focus will be divided into two key areas. The first is an exciting project evaluating formulation concepts containing active ingredients to meet an ambitious target product profile (TPP) criteria. This initiative centers on designing a new advanced topical hemostat and delivery device to penetrate new surgical specialties.
The second key area is managing pre-projects in our product innovation pipeline. Here, you will guide the team through the pre-project phase by defining clear objectives, structuring project plans and tracks, ensuring progress, and fostering creativity. You will lead the team in exploring and discovering new technologies relevant to combination devices, where biomaterials and biological active components are essential to our products.
Your role will include:
- Responsibility for 1-2 early-stage product innovation projects.
- Drive planning, execution, risk, and change management for respective projects.
- Form, build, and lead the project team to bring structure and facilitate cross-functional collaboration to ensure accountability and drive for results.
- Ensure commitment and ownership from project Work Package Owners (WPOs) by setting clear direction and expectations.
- Reporting to the project owner (sponsor VP), project steering group, as well as internal and external stakeholders on progress and challenges.
- Time and resource planning and follow-up, managing project finances and resources to manage the total delivery.
- Ensuring the early-stage product development documentation and regulatory requirements following internal Ferrosan MD processes to take into later stage phase of development.
- Participation in best practices and active development of the Project Model focused on agile project management.
The ideal candidate
Our ideal candidate thrives in leading highly explorative, early-stage projects focused on generating and developing new ideas into actual concepts. With a background that could include scientific expertise, you understand pharmaceutical or food chemistry and formulation processes enough to guide and challenge your team while fostering creativity and innovation.
You are comfortable navigating uncertainty and know what it takes to guide a team through concept generation, user needs discovery, and value proposition development in alignment with the commercial direction.
You thrive in a flat and dynamic environment; you embrace shifting priorities and the creative chaos of early innovation.
You take ownership of pre-projects, encouraging experimentation, facilitating breakthroughs, and ensuring that promising ideas are developed into viable opportunities. Your strong communication skills and ability to align diverse stakeholders are key to delivering impactful results.
In addition, your profile contains
- Academic background: master’s or Ph.D. in life sciences (such as pharmacy, etc.
- Chemistry, protein chemistry, or similar).
- Experience as a Project Manager within early-stage or late-stage product development from biotech, life science, or medical devices.
- Strong skills in leading project teams ensure accountability for individual and overall results.
- Understanding the dynamics and complexity of explorative development process involving co-creation and idea generation with specialists, leading to ideas for products.
- Structured and planned approach but still pragmatic approach in leading projects.
- Scientific curiosity to be able to engage and find solutions with engineers and specialists.
- Strong interpersonal skills, self-starting and collaborating personality.
- Ability to think strategically ahead and anticipate consequences in projects.
