R&D Data Scientist – Product Innovation New Business Development

About Ferrosan Medical Devices A/S

Ferrosan Medical Devices A/S develops and produces a portfolio of hemostatic products to aid surgery and minimize bleeding challenges (SPONGOSTAN™ and SURGIFLO™). The products are registered as medical devices (Class III). They are sold internationally in over 100 countries in close collaboration with the primary customer and innovation partner, Johnson & Johnson MedTech.

All main functions in the company are in Søborg, DK, including production facilities, so everyone sits door to door with easy access to each other.

The Product Innovation department

Ferrosan Medical Devices is working on several innovation projects to address new surgical needs. These projects explore trends and new concepts in a growing market with a changing surgical setting toward robotics and minimally invasive surgery. Additionally, the department plays a strategic role in production expansion projects, addressing material changes, material science, and the definition and management of Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs) to ensure scalability and quality in production.

The department consists of a highly skilled team of 17 scientists, engineers, and technicians who cover various scientific and technical disciplines, such as chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical science, process engineering, design research, and prototyping. We are adding an R&D Data Scientist to the department to become more data-driven.

The department houses three laboratories, a machine shop, and a pilot facility. Instrumentation includes enzymatic activity assays, coagulation assays, UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR microscopy, DSC, adhesion/cohesion, rheology, mechanical test systems, texture analysis, mechanical processing, 3D printing, and pilot-scale processing equipment.

You will join a significant capacity expansion project centered around scaling up several central unit operations in our production line. The team comprises process engineers, biomaterial scientists, chemists, design engineers, and lab technicians.

The Product Innovation department is placed under New Business Development, and you report to the Product Innovation Director.

We are looking for an R&D Data Scientist to play a key role in driving and building more data-driven solutions within production and product development. In this position, you will work on optimizing production processes and supporting the development of new formulations by leveraging advanced analytics, multivariate analysis, and design of experiments (DOE).

Your role

A significant part of your role will be defining Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs), enabling data-driven decision-making in production expansion and early-stage innovation projects. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to establish a stronger foundation for data-driven practices, e.g., establishing correlations of intermediate material properties to upstream process variables or raw material properties.

One of your key assignments is a large-scale production expansion project involving a new production line. It will run for 2-4 years and leverage advanced process control methods (IPC). As part of the project team, you collaborate cross-functionally to define and set the criteria for Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs), ensuring they align with intermediate and product performance requirements. These CQAs will then be integrated into user requirement specifications for production equipment (URS), laying the foundation for robust monitoring systems.

You will use advanced tools like chemometric analysis and multivariate statistical methods. Through simulations and lab testing, you will analyze data to identify key attributes and validate their acceptance ranges. This ensures a seamless transition of CQAs into production, maintaining consistent quality and output. Additionally, you will support front-end innovation projects with data structure, multivariate analysis, and statistics in the development phases of new formulations, processes, device performance, and system integration.

Your role will include:

  • Defining and managing Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs) to ensure product quality and consistency.
  • Collaborating with your colleagues in Product Innovation, Technology Innovation, Process Support, and QA.
  • Writing protocols and documentation.
  • Using tools like JMP and MATLAB/PLS_Toolbox to analyze data, develop predictive models, and optimize processes.
  • Validating CQAs through simulations, lab tests, and documentation to ensure product performance and support production ramp-up.
  • Overseeing the integration of CQAs into production processes.
  • Support front-end innovation projects with data structure, multivariate analysis, and statistics.

The ideal candidate

You have a strong academic background in, for example, pharmaceutical or food science, chemistry, or chemical/process engineering, and you have experience in production upscaling, process optimization, or late-phase process development.

You have hands-on expertise with tools such as JMP and MATLAB Toolboxes, particularly the PLS_Toolbox, and you are skilled in applying chemometric techniques to solve complex challenges.

You are familiar with defining and managing Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs) and contributing to process validation and optimization. You thrive in project team environments, collaborating closely with colleagues across disciplines to ensure high-quality outcomes.

You approach your work with a structured mindset, focusing on details and delivering high-quality data analysis and documentation. You are comfortable managing complex datasets and translating them into actionable insights.

In addition, your profile contains

  • Academic background: Master’s or Ph.D. in life sciences (pharmaceutical or food science, chemistry, or chemical/process engineering).
  • General experience with pharmaceutical or food processes and production techniques.
  • Expertise with MVA tools such as JMP and MATLAB Toolboxes, particularly the PLS Toolbox, is an advantage.
  • Experience with programming languages, such as Python or MATLAB’, is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with other tools and software for data analysis and process optimization is a must.
  • You are skilled in applying chemometric techniques to solve complex challenges and data-driven insights.
  • Expertise in Design of Experiments (DOE) and Multivariate Analysis is essential.
  • General knowledge of laboratory techniques and engineering principles for pharmaceutical development and manufacturing.
  • Science curiosity, solution-orientated, and pragmatic approach.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a self-starting collaborative personality.
  • Ability to put your work into a cross-functional reference.
  • Strong oral/written communication skills
